Top 11 Best RPG Games of All Time

Updated on January 31, 2016

I have been a gaming addict since i was little and i especially loved the role-playing games. I love to explore fantasy worlds and customize my character. There are a lot aspects that make a good role-playing game, but the most important one is a good story. Because i love rpg's so much i made a list of my top 11 picks. I included a trailer and links to IGN and gamespot. Enjoy!

11. Dark Cloud

This is probably one of my most treasured rpg's. Way back when i got my first PS2 it came with a demo disk. dark cloud was on it an i loved it. It would only allow you to play for 1 hour and after that you had to start over again. I probably started over again 20 times because i loved playing it so much. When i had the chance i bought the game and played it non-stop for weeks. Dark Cloud has some cool gameplay features. You can build cities with lost pieces found in a dungeon for example. The weapon upgrading system is the best thing about dark cloud. There are a huge amount of weapons which you can upgrade. There are a lot of different upgrade possibilties and when your weapon is powerful enough, you can transform it into an even more powerful weapon.

10. Prototype

I don't know why it is so much fun to roam through a city and kill everything on your path. Prototype is probably the most brutal game on this list. You are Alex Mercer, a mutant who is able to mutate himself on the fly. You can transform your hands into huge hammers for example. The gameplay is gory and fun. You battle other mutants and monsters as well as army vehicles and infantry. If you feel murderous you can roam through the city and throw people of tall building. The graphics and the story are both good.

Gamespot: 8.5 IGN: 7.5 Boefie: 7.5 For: Xbox 360, PS3, PC Released: 2009

9. Overlord

This game is probably the most sadistic and unknown game in the list. In this game you are the overlord. An evil entity who wants to rule the world. To achieve this you have loyal minions at your disposal, crazy little monsters who do everything for their master. These guys will make you laugh all the time. They will pillage and burn everything in sight and gladly die for you. They are dumber than a pig and love drinking beer. The game has nice graphics and even lets you build your own castle. the gameplay is extremely fun and the story is good.

Gamespot: 7.5 IGN: 8.0 Boefie: 7.5 For: Xbox 360, PC Released: 2007

8. Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is a unique and depressing game. It has this kind of charm that pulls you in its world. You wander around in a huge wasteland slaughtering of all kinds of mutant monsters. There are a lot of fun quests that you can do. The world is a bit depressing which fits the mood perfectly. One great and unique feature is the radio. It's a weird but awesome feeling to walk the wastelands while listing to 60's music. I actually loved those songs, they give you this peaceful feeling.

Gamespot: 9.0 IGN: 9.6 Boefie: 8.0 For: Xbox 360, PS3, PC Released: 2008

7. The Last Remnant

The Last Remnant is a turn based rpg made by square enix. The gameplay is unique and fun. Most of the time will be spent battling fantasy monsters and customizing your weapons. One unique feature in this game is that you can switch between the japanese and the english language. I prefer the original Japanese language because the english voices are a bit dull. The last remnant has a wondeful storline and great graphics. The story and battles are epic.

Gamespot: 8.0 IGN: 6.8 Boefie: 8.0 For: Xbox 360, PS3, PC Released: 2008

6. Assasins Creed series

The assasins creed series will make you kill a lot of people. It is so much fun to stab a person in the back and walk away like nothing happened. Assasins creed is a truly unique game. Never before has such a game been released, the only thing you will be doing in this game is butchering people! You will get all kinds of different situations and assassination targets to deal with. The gameplay is great but can get repetitive after killing 1000+ people. The story and graphics are both great also.

Gamespot: 9.0 IGN: 7.5 Boefie: 8.5 For: Xbox 360, PS3, PC Released: 2007

5. The Witcher 2

The witcher is an epic medieval fantasy rpg. Witchers are extremely powerful mutant swordfighters. They are trained to battle monsters, but you will be fighting people also. The witcher 2 has an amazing storyline which is all about making choices. The choices you make in the game will affect everything in a major way. The graphics are simply breathtaking. The swordfighting in the game is awesome, witchers have wicked swordfighting moves. When i happen to have something in my hand that resembles a sword i always try to do them, thinking im a witcher. You will probably be doing that too after having played this game.

Gamespot: 9.0 IGN: 9.0 Boefie: 9.0 For: Xbox 360, PC Released: 2012

4. Dragon Age: Origins

I remember drinking green tea and eating cookies while playing dragon age: origins. Dragon age is a must play for rpg fans. You can select different classes and different races to begin your game with. The story is a classical fantasy story, some ancient mages brought doom upon the land by creating creatures called the darkspawn. These darkspawn are butchering everyone and need to be stopped. You will fight with 3 team members on your side. You can control every team member which is a great feature. The gameplay is great and the story is epic. Dragon age 2 however was a big failure.

Gamespot: 9.5 IGN: 9.2 Boefie: 9.0 For: Xbox 360, PC, PS3, MAC Released: 2009

3. Mass Effect series

The mass effect series is truly amazing. It has an intricate story line and lots of engaging side quests, not to mention all the incredible worlds. You can team up with different alien species to battle enemies with and all kinds of sci-fi weaponry. The story will have you playing this game through the night. Once the story grabs a hold of you, it will be impossible to stop playing. I was amazed by all the different kinds of aliens the game features, you will see all kinds of amazing creations. The graphics are also amazing. Everything little thing in this game is just perfect.

Gamespot: 8.5 IGN: 9.2 Boefie: 9.5 For: Xbox 360, PC, Released: 2007

2. The Elder Scrolls Skyrim

After having waited months to get this, i finally got my copy of skyrim! I shoved it into my cd-drive and played it through the night. This game has everything a great rpg needs. It has a huge free-roaming world, quests all over the place, epic gameplay and dragons! The graphics are amazing, all the scenery just looks amazing. The great thing about this game is that you can do whatever you want to do. You are not bounded by a main story line. If all you wish to do is massacre villages you can do just that! It is like being a toddler again, living in your own world doing whatever you want!

Gamespot: 9.0 IGN: 9.5 Boefie: 9.8 For: Xbox 360, PC, PS3 Released: 2011

1. Kingdom Hearts

This game will hold a special place in my heart forever. I began playing it when i was about 11 years old and loved it to death. A combination between disney worlds and incredibly engaging gameplay made me an addict. I have played this game several times and its still amazing. The graphics were great for the time. It has wonderful soundtracks and the characters are unforgetable. You will fight alongside disney characters like Donald and Goofy! Can a game get any better?! You will complete several storylines in a lot of different disney worlds which all contribute to the main story line a little. Your life is not complete if you have not played this game! I really hope Kingdom Hearts 3 will be released soon, square enix has confirmed that they are working on it.

Gamespot: 8.2 IGN: 9.0 Boefie: 10+ For: PS2 Released: 2002
